Southeast Alaska is
a place of great beauty, tranquility, and adventure.
It is also a place of great loss, deep sorrow and
darkness. This duality is known to all who live
here very long. We are surrounded by the sea and
it is the sea that gives SE Alaska its unmatchable
beauty and calm, its raging passion and merriment.
Almost everyone who lives here owns a water vessel
of some kind, and many own two. May it be a canoe,
kayak, skiff, sailboat, commercial fishing boat,
or yacht. We all get out in these deadly cold waters,
some people reach out to the waters for exercise,
some for pleasure, others work in it every day;
however, the hypothermic temperatures of the oceans
deep in Alaska reminds us, who voyage into it, to
stay safe. Alaska demands that one be vigilant and
respectful of the wilderness, because it can take
your life.
In Juneau, we have a great community of people.
There is over 30,000 people living here, yet it
feels like a much smaller town. Maybe it's because
there is no roads in or out of Juneau, you can only
travel here by boat or plane, or maybe it the long
nights of winter that make us bond. The winter is
a time of gathering with friends, since the shortest
day is only 6 1⁄2 hours we enjoy fun evening
events and tend to go to bed early. On the other
hand, Juneau summers sometimes feel endless. If
it is a sunny day, no one gets anything done, unless
its outside. Either way SE Alaska is a place of
rich friendships and the diversity in its people
the matches it’s surrounding.
